Mother's Day Celebrations

Mother's Day has its roots in North America. With the spread of internet and globalization, the celebration has erased its boundaries and has made its mark all across the globe. Today, most countries in the world celebrate Mother's Day, though at different dates.

In the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, China, Japan, Philippines, and South Africa, Mother's Day is celebrated on Second Sunday of May, every year.

In Arab countries, Mother's Day celebration is on March 21st every year, while in the United Kingdom and Ireland, it is on Fourth Sunday in the Lent season.

People of European countries celebrate Mother's Day on March 8th every year.

Irrespective of the date, the aim of this beautiful occasion remains the same - to honor and recognize motherhood and its greatness.

Historical Perspective of Mother's Day

Though the modern day celebrations have originated in Western countries; historically the origin of Mother's Day lies in Greek and Roman culture. Rhea, the Greek Goddess and the wife of Cronus, is known to be the mother of many deities. Greeks specifically dedicated an occasion to celebrate the greatness of this maternal goddess during the spring season every year.

In the Roman culture, it was Goddess Cybele who was considered the epitome of Motherhood. They even had a special festival which they called Hilaria and celebrated it during every spring as respect of this Goddess. This festival usually spanned three days and was full of games, parades, and celebrations.

Mother's Day has significance as per Christianity. Virgin Mary or the Mother of Christ is worshiped on this day. Followers of Christianity offer flowers and gifts to the Virgin Mary and pay their tribute to her.

However, it was the idea of Julia Ward Howe, a renowned poetess, activist, and writer of the United States that led to the beginning of Mother's Day in the modern era. When it was first celebrated, Mother's Day was celebrated on the 2nd of June and another occasion called Mother's Peace Day was celebrated on every second Sunday of June. Later, it was gradually changed to the dates that the occasion is being celebrated now.
